I’m not feeling particularly creative which always feeds my anxiety and leads to a lot of frustration. I know everyone is a little over snowmen right now, but I’ve been playing with these guys this week. They were in my scrap bin and I thought I’d resurrect them. Never fear the cows are still on my worktable ha ha!

snowmanOkay I have to go and change the sheets on the beds before the weather turns gloomy and wet again. Then think of dinner. Then maybe, maybe I’ll get to do some sewing ha ha! Enjoy your weekend everyone, toni xx

Friday on my mind.

Hi y’all,

What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been in the Alexander household. The roof and skylight have been repaired. The poor guy who fixed it had a brace on his leg, I don’t know how he was climbing up and down ladders, and scuttling all over our double-height roof (without a harness)!

You mustn’t think we live a life of woe, we absolutely don’t. I write about the crazy things that happen to us because otherwise this blog would be mundane. I could tell you that I spent seven hours today sitting on a computer doing paperwork and drawing diagrams, or I could tell you about the risotto I had stuck in my belly button (true story from tonight’s dinner). So please laugh with us, life is a crazy road trip full of laughter and tears.

My leg is healing nicely. Did you know Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world? I grew up in tropical North Queensland and spent a large part of my childhood on a beach or a boat. When I was a kid adults would plaster you with oil so you would get a sunburn/suntan; it was thought to be healthy. I remember my GP getting me to sit in the sun everyday to help combat teenage acne. Of course I’m paying the price for those years in the sun with inevitable skin cancers.

pugs 1

Remy-the-Lion is babysitting the pug quilt. He’s quite determined never to get off it. The lovely Fiona is very busy right now, but I’m in the quilting queue. If I can get a good piccy this weekend (without the quilting) I’ll get the pattern up early for you.

It’s been a week of paperwork and putting together wholesale orders. I don’t think I’ve been near the sewing machine – much to my distress. I have a list as long as my arm of quilts I want to make but time is my enemy. I need to go fabric shopping this weekend, my scrap bins are overflowing but I’ve run out of bigger pieces that I can use for background fabrics.

IMG_1082The sample sale has been postponed for a week or so, I do apologise for the hassle. I wasn’t expecting the week that was. I’ll be in touch with everyone who contacted me sometime in the next few days.

Etsy is having a big sale promotion this week and I’ve decided to join in. We are offering 20% off everything in store (except Henry). Pop on over and grab yourself a bargain or two.

I picked up three vintage wool blankets on Etsy this week. The price for new ones was horrendous, upwards of $250 each and the available colours were so blech. The three I bought are excellent brands, in perfect condition, and cost under $150 for the three. Bargain!

I’ll leave you tonight with this gorgeous quilt that Cherie H. made for Liz. It’s adapted from the Cuddle Bears pattern in the Happy Quilts book. Isn’t it absolutely stunning. I love this so much. Thanks Cherie and Liz for sharing it with us.

The Red Boots Club

One of the greatest pleasures I have is seeing the quilts and toys you have made using my patterns. I’ve been toying (no pun intended LOL) with the idea of having a ‘Red Boots Club’ for some time, but I haven’t quite worked out how to do it, or whether you would be interested.

Let me know what you think, and any suggestions on how we could run it. xx

A big thank you to Debbie, Sonia, Shelley, Dawna, Sue, Lois, Margaret, Kylie, Anthea, Terri, Kirsten, Janet, Michelle, Kate, Tarnyia, Sio, Elaine, Jo, Wendy, Martha, Fiona, Vicki, and Jenny for sharing their photos with me. I will draw a name from the Red Boots hat and send you a gift in the post.

A Mermaid’s Tale…

The mermaid pattern is available for the introductory price of $5 for the next 24 hours, then the price goes back up to $7.50. Get in quick to catch a bargain.

I’ve put the Fishy Fishy Fishy pattern on sale for $5 too! I have every intention of making another beachy/seaside quilt with some of your favourite and requested critters. Stay tuned!

fishy fishy fishyDid you know that there is an easy-to-make mermaid (and merman – my daughters suggested I call him a mer-dude) doll pattern in the Happy Quilts book?

If you have the book and don’t want to use felt for the hair, click on the Happy Quilts menu at the top of the page and there is a tutorial on how to make the hair from cotton.

I’m a little unsure what to write here anymore. I have had a number of emails telling me to stick to quilting and to keep my personal life out of it. I’ve thought about it a lot.

My favourite blog is one where the writer is openly bipolar. She’s a self-admitted hot mess, but she’s warm, kind, loveable, and human. Her life is more calamitous than mine could ever be, but she’s never boring and I’ve never come across anyone as willing as her to give of herself. I would rather be a loving mess of a person than a perfect, cold, advertising machine.

So what have I been doing this week? On the quilting front – I’ve started five new quilts, and have written a list of 100 quilts I want to make. I threw out three old quilts that were beyond fixing, and have saved most of the fabric and HeatnBond from the great hot water flood of last week. Boiling water and HeatnBond don’t mix!

We’ve had most of the plumbing replaced in the house and have our hot water back – no more boiling saucepans for baths. I was fine with bucket baths until the mercury took  a plunge into the depths of Winter. Our bathroom was like a scene out of Game of Thrones… icy cold (and full of white walkers).

I saw my doctor this week, trying to get a handle on my stress. My body has decided to react by breaking out in hives from bottom to top and I’ve had enough. What do you do when your Doctor is just as stressed as you are and asks your opinion on the state of the world? It just goes to show that we’re all stressed in different ways and should always be kind to each other.

We’ve made pastrami, chocolate cake, and pizza this weekend. My favourite K-drama (Korean drama series) is coming to an end and it has us on the edge of our seats. I just want the protagonists to get a happy ending. Recently I have had this childish need for ‘happily every after’ endings. Perhaps it’s a reaction to the madness in this world.

Right now I’m sitting next to a warm, purring ginger furball, the Benadryl is kicking in and I’m not so itchy. I’m thinking of making a hot chocolate before I jump into bed with a hot water bottle and some sweet Korean dreams.

Monday morning signals the end of Uni for this semester, plus hot coffee and pancakes for breakfast. Senior High has a few weeks left, then it’s hols from the stress of exams for a couple of weeks. Yippee!

Paper Mermaids…

I’m almost done with the mermaids. They remind of a string of paper dolls, bright, fun, colourful. I’ll have the quilt done tonight and the pattern ready sometime mid-week.

mermaid quilt newWe’re still without hot water. Strangely hubby and I are enjoying the austerity of bathing from a bucket of water. It’s startling how little water you need to get really clean. The main pain in the toosh is boiling the water on the stove first.

mmaid hair

I’m taking it one day at a time. My stress levels are such that I can’t turn off my fight or flight response. It’s a bit scary but we’re working on it. I’d love to move out of suburbia, maybe to a cottage in the country. Maybe have some cows and ducks and geese, dogs and cats, and no scary neighbours LOL.

mermaidsHave a great week everyone, mid-week for the mermaids and the free doll house quilt pattern. xx

Just keep swimming…

with the mermaids.

That title could apply to us too. Our hot water system dumped 315 litres of hot water all over the laundry floor yesterday… eeeek! $3000 later…

mmaid hairHenry has finally arrived! All orders and prizes will be sent out tomorrow. Henry will be in the Etsy store this weekend. Hopefully the mermaid pattern will be too, but no promises. xx
