The Kennel Club…

It started with a fabric audition. Colours and patterns, light and dark.

dog quiltA week into the project and I decided the layout and colour choices weren’t quite working, so I pulled everything apart and started again. The green background blocks were removed.

Zig Zags became an obsession. The green fabric was re-introduced.

Week two and it still wasn’t coming together. The dogs had to go! There was some serious late night un-stitching happening LOL. It nearly ended up in the bin.

We did some familial brain-storming and No. 1 daughter had an idea that solved all my problems. Hallelujah! I was still trying to fit Frank-the-Pug in somewhere, but she (also) took a firm stand and set him aside. I promise he will be back!

Daisies were stitched.

Mess was made.

I ran out of fabric and had to make compromises.dog stitch 3And finally a gloriously happy quilt emerged.

It’s off to be quilted… as soon as the cat removes his furry little butt and I remove all the cat fur! Fiona I may have to send him up the hill with the quilt, he seriously won’t leave it alone LOL.

Catch ups.

Howdy Folks, how are things in your neck of the woods? I hope you and your families are safe wherever you may be.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Red Boots household. No. 3 daughter has just finished her Uni (College) entry exams and we can all breathe a sigh of relief that they’re done. All we have to do now is sit back and wait to see how she went. She wants to do Biomedical Science, but there are plenty of bridging degrees she can take if she doesn’t get in straight away.

I’ve been painting the laundry, it’s actually been quite stress-busting. We’ve lived in this house for 22 years and the laundry has always been a dark, scary pit full of plumbing, snakes, and other assorted wildlife. When the boiler blew a few weeks ago we leapt at the opportunity to move everything out and now I have a big open room that I can turn into a real laundry/mud room. Bliss!

On the quilting front, things are coming along nicely. After a few false starts, the dog quilt is under way and I have a free project coming up for the lovelies at Therm-o-Web. Stay tuned for that one, it will be released in October. I’m thinking of making a Quillow for sleepovers.

Christmas is coming upon us fast. Is there anything you would like me to design/make in time for Christmas? Let me know. No promises, but I’ll try.

Remember I was growing my hair out of it’s very short, cropped style? Well I’m starting to look like something from a Playdoh Fussy Pumper Barber Shop. It’s not quite long enough to look anything but messy at the moment but I’ve resisted the urge to lop it off – which is somewhat of a miracle. I’m the ultimate pick up the sewing scissors and cut my hair at midnight kind of person.

I’m sad to say that the Birthday Club may have to end. Too many people have signed up who aren’t really interested, people who enter giveaways for the sake of it. Hardly anyone replies to their ‘winning email’ and it’s becoming pointless. Maybe we can do this a different way? Perhaps we can combine it with a Red Boots sewing club? I haven’t forgotten about the sewing club, I’m just not sure of the best way to do it. Link me to any ‘sewing clubs’ you know about so I can see how it’s done (please).

While I think of it, Therm-o-Web are having a flash sale on HeatnBond Stretch this Thursday (US time for US residents only). Pop on over to their website to grab a pack or two at this special price. This fusible webbing is for use on stretch fabrics which makes it’s perfect for t-shirts! It’s really soft and doesn’t make the tee stiff. I’ll do a post about it later this year. Can someone give me the gift of more time? please? LOL.

Well it’s almost midnight and I have a hundred and one emails to reply to before bed. Thank goodness Daughter No. 1 has supplied tonight’s chocolate to keep me going. I swear my children will be the death of my diet. Honeycomb Maltesers… it’s not fair, I can feel my tummy wobbling in anticipation LOL. toni xx

Taking Stock. June.

Howdy folks, it’s the end of the Australian financial year and it’s time to take stock. I set myself the 30th June deadline to decide whether to keep Red Boots running or not.

After several weeks of angst I’ve decide to keep the business open for another year – health and finances permitting. When I’m tired I’ll take a rest, when I’m stressed I’ll step away for a while.

My main issue is exposure. I need you my lovely, lovely followers to share as much as you can. I know a lot of you already do that for me and I’m extremely grateful for your help. As an independent designer I don’t get the exposure so many of the bigger, affiliated guys do and I can’t afford the $1,000’s it takes to attend the craft fairs.

If you know about any market places or groups I can join and share my quilts please send me links to their sites. I’ve been invited to join several market places over the past year but some of them take up to 70% of your sale amounts and it’s not worth the work you put into it.

So what’s in store for Red Boots? A new website (hopefully) so I’m not so reliant on Etsy, a huge giveaway, a Red Boot Quilts group so you can share your quilts and ask advice, and lots more happy quilts.

Later this year I will be giving away the Wild Things (monster) quilt from the Happy Quilts book! Stay tuned for details.

clothesline-1

This week I’ve been working on an updated version of the Santa’s House quilt. I retired this quilt at the beginning of the year but I’ve had so many emails requesting its return, I thought I would give it a refresh and redesign. Santa’s House 2 will be available soon (if Remy-the-Lion gets his butt off it).

Xmas Santas House

On a personal front I’m still growing out my hair, my horrible neighbours are still my horrible neighbours, and property developers are still pestering us, and offering us too little, for the house (Australian property prices are some of the highest in the world). A lotto win is starting to look like the only way we will ever move out of here LOL.

I’m going to stop reading politics, avoid the news, get out in the sunshine and forget the thoroughly depressing woes of the world.

Here’s to another 12 months! xx
